Introduction
Installing the batteries
Slide and remove the battery cover located on the
rear of the BA-40. Insert the batteries observing
the correct polarity.
If the unit malfunctions and you are unable to
correct the problem by turning the power off and
on several times, remove the batteries and then
reinstall them.
The included batteries are provided so that you can verify that the
unit operates correctly; their lifespan may be shorter than normal.
If the batteries have run down, the battery
symbol will appear in the left of the display.
When this occurs, please install new batteries as
soon as possible. Turn off the BA-40 before you
replace the batteries.
Using the stand
You can use the BA-40 in an upright position by
opening the stand located on the rear of the unit.
Tuning procedure
Meter mode
This mode lets you tune while watching the meter in the display.
1. Connect the tuner. The method will depend on the instrument you're
using.
When tuning an acoustic instrument
If you want to use the optional Korg CM-100L contact mic, connect the plug
of the CM-100L to the BA-40's INPUT jack.
If you want to use the internal mic, don't connect anything to the input
jack.
When tuning an electric instrument
Use an instrument a cable with mono plugs to connect your instrument to
the BA-40's INPUT jack.
If you connect a cable to the INPUT jack, you won't be able to use
the internal mic.
You can connect the BA-40's OUTPUT jack to your amp or other device.
In this case, you should first connect your instrument to the BA-40's
INPUT jack, and then use an instrument cable with mono plugs to
connect the OUTPUT jack to your amp. The sound of your instrument
will be sent from the BA-40's OUTPUT jack to your amp, allowing you to
tune or perform without changing the connections.
Never unplug the BA-40's INPUT jack while the OUTPUT jack is
connected to an amp or sound system. When you unplug the
INPUT jack, the internal mic will automatically become active,
possibly causing an acoustic feedback loop when sound received by
the internal mic is amplified through your speakers and picked up
again by the internal mic.
2.Press the [STANDBY/ON] switch.
The BA-40 will be in Meter mode.
The power will automatically turn off if the tuner has not been used for
approximately ten minutes.
3. Press the [INST] switch several times to select the instrument you want
to tune.
The tuning values will depend on the instrument you select.
- BANJO: 5G, 4D, 3G, 2B, 1D
- FIDDLE: 4G, 3D, 2A, 1E
- MANDOLIN: 4G, 3D, 2A, 1E
- RESO (Resophonic Guitar): 6G, 5B, 4D, 3G, 2B, 1D
- GUITAR: 6E, 5A, 4D, 3G, 2B, 1E
- BASS: 4E, 3A, 2D, 1G
4. Play a single note on your instrument.
The name of the note closest to the pitch you played will appear in the
upper left of the display. Tune your instrument so that the desired note
name appears.
If you're using the internal mic, position your instrument as close
as possible to the internal mic so that extraneous background
noise is not picked up while tuning.
5.While playing a single note on your instrument, tune your
instrument so that the tip of the needle is in the center of the display
and the center indicator of the tuning guide is lit (if you're tuning to
a reference of A=440 Hz).
The left indicator of the tuning guide will light if your instrument is
flat, and the right indicator will light if your instrument is sharp. One
step in the meter indicates 2 Hz. For example if you're tuning to a
reference of 442 Hz, tune your instrument so that the tip of the tuning
needle is one step to the right of the center.
Sound Out mode
This mode lets you tune while listening to a reference tone.
1.Perform steps 2 and 3 of “Meter mode.”
2. Press the [SOUND] button.
The BA-40 will be in Sound Out mode, and its speaker will sound a
reference tone.
3. Press the [SOUND] button to select the desired note name.
The sound you hear will be one octave higher than the actual pitch of a
guitar or resophonic guitar, and two octaves higher than the pitch of a
bass.
4.Tune your instrument to match the reference tone.
Sharp/Flat tuning
You can use Meter mode or Sound Out mode to tune your instrument to
a pitch that's higher or lower than the selected note name.
You can't use Sharp/Flat tuning when FIDDLE is selected.
This setting is cancelled when you turn off the power or use the [INST]
switch to change settings.

your instrument as the number of semitones above or below the
selected note name.
