Question About Tascam Musical Instrument 788

i am having trouble with my old m-216 and my new mics. the tascam was my dads and i am now trying to connect an xlr mic to the mic input. i get no sound i dont know if you have to put PAD on it or if its just a faulty input or the mic or even the xlr cable itself. please help!
