ULTRA-DI PRO DI800
1. INTRODUCTION
Thank you for showing confidence in BEHRINGER products
by purchasing the DI800.
Be it on-stage or in the studio, musicians often look for ways
to connect certain signal sources directly to the mixing console.
Even though this approach has obvious advantages, there are
still some technical hurdles obstructing its implementation. For
example, keyboards seldom feature balanced outputs, and guitars
can not be directly connected to mixing consoles because of the
high impedance of guitar signals.
A DI-box lets you directly tap into a high-impedance,
unbalanced signalfor example, the signal between a guitar
and a guitar amp. From there on, you can feed the signal directly
to a mixing console.
There are active and passive DI-boxes. A passive DI-box is
more affordable, but its performance is highly dependent on the
impedance of the equipment to which it is connected. When the
impedance on the mixing consoles end changes, so does the
impedance at the DI-boxs input. A passive DI-box only functions
correctly when the impedance of the connected equipment is
exactly specified (high at the input, low at the output).
On the other hand, active DI-boxes, such as the DI800, are not
bound by these limitations, since the signal located at the input is
buffered by an amplifier. The input impedance of the DI800 is
extremely high. It does not influence the sound source and has
absolutely no effect on the signal flow though the DI-box. The
output impedance is balanced and is very low, and the signal is
far less susceptible to picking up noise. The ULTRA-DI PRO
always transmits signals optimally, independent of the impedance
of the connected equipment.
In addition to being powered by a mains connection, the
ULTRA-DI PRO DI800 can also run on phantom power provided
by your mixing console.
+ To avoid damaging your loudspeakers, always first
connect the DI-box and only then open up the
respective channel strip.
FOREWORD
Dear Customer,
welcome to the team of
BEHRINGER users, and
thank you very much for
expressing your confi-
dence in us by pur-
chasing the DI800.
Writing this foreword
for you gives me great
pleasure, because it
represents the culmi-
nation of many months
of hard work delivered
by our engineering team
to achieve a very am-
bitious goal: to develop
an outstanding piece of
equipment, whose flexi-
bility makes it ideally
suited for use in studios
as well as in P.A. systems. The task of designing our new
ULTRA-DI PRO certainly meant a great deal of responsibility,
which we assumed by focusing on you, the discerning user and
musician. Meeting your expectations also meant a lot of work
and night shifts. But it was fun, too. Developing a product usually
brings a lot of people together, and what a great feeling it is
when all who participated in such a project can be proud of
what theyve achieved.
It is our philosophy to share our enjoyment with you, because
you are the most important member of the BEHRINGER team.
With your highly competent suggestions for new products youve
made a significant contribution to shaping our company and making
it successful. In return, we guarantee you uncompromising quality
as well as excellent technical and audio properties at an extremely
reasonable price. All of this will enable you to give free rein to
your creativity without being hampered by budget constraints.
We are often asked how we manage to produce such high-
quality devices at such unbelievably low prices. The answer is
quite simple: its you, our customers! Many satisfied customers
mean large sales volumes enabling us to get better purchasing
terms for components, etc. Isnt it only fair to pass this benefit on
to you? Because we know that your success is our success
too!
I would like to thank all of you who have made the
ULTRA-DI PRO possible. You have all made your own personal
contributions, from the developers to the many other employees
at this company, and to you, the BEHRINGER user.
My friends, its been worth the effort!
Thank you very much,
Uli Behringer
