Standard Placement & Use Guidelines
1. Always point the microphone at the desired source of sound, and away from any unwanted sources.
2.The microphone should be located close to the sound source to minimize interference from other potential sound sources.
3. Use the 3-to-1 rule when using multiple microphones. Place each microphone three times farther from other microphones as from the
desired sound source.
4. Minimize over-handling of the microphone to reduce unwanted mechanical noise.
5.Working close to the microphone will increase the bass tone and also provide increased gain-before-feedback.
Powering the ENG618:
The ENG 618 is powered by an external 12 - 52 volt phantom power supply or 9-V battery. The battery is needed to operate the
headphone amplifier circuit. Initial use of the battery circuit, causes the low-battery indicator to flash momentarily. The lowbattery LED
remains on when the voltage drops indicating a need to replace the battery.
To operate the ENG 618, use high-quality balanced cable with XLR connectors to connect the electronics housing to the mixer input. If the
mixer is supplying phantom power, this will power the ENG 618 with or without the 9-V battery. Without phantom power the ENG 618
requires a 9-V battery.
An 1/8-in. mini-plug may be used to connect an 8-ohm stereo headphone to the ENG 618. Plugging into the headphone jack automatically
switches on the battery power to the volume-adjustable headphone amplifier. This allows the operator to hear the “sound field” through
the headphones whether on-line via the XLR connector or not. This can be very useful when doing a background environmental sound
check before the actual “on-air” use.
The headphone jack could also be used to connect to a portable tape recorder for quick minimal equipment coverage.
Each segment of the telescoping boom pole can be secured with a twist of the collet at any position along its length. By loosening, the
segments can collapse quickly into each other. Folding the microphone toward the handle allows the unit to locate into the base for
storage.
