Temperature-Pressure Relief Valve
_WARNING
At the time of manufacturethis water heaterwas provided
witha combinationtemperature-pressuresreliefvalvecertified
by a nationally recognized testinglaboratorythat maintains
periodicinspectionofproductionoflistedequipmentor mate-
rials, as meeting the requirements for Relief Valvesand
AutomaticGasShutoffDevicesfor Hot Water SupplySystems,
and the latesteditionof ANSI Z21.22 and the coderequire-
mentsofASME.If replaced,the valvemust meetthe require-
mentsoflocalcedes,butnot lessthan a combinationtempera.
ture andpressurerelief valvecertifiedasmeeting the require-
meritsfor ReliefValvesandAutomaticGasShutoffDevicesfor
Hot Water SupplySystems,ANSI Z21.22bya nationallyrecog-
nizedtesting laboratorythat maintainsperiodicinspectionof
productionof listedequipmentor materials.
The valvemustbe niarkedwith a maximumset pressurenot
to exceedthe marked hydrostaticworkingpressureof the
water heater(150 IbsJsq.in.)anda dischargecapacitynot less
thanthewater heaterinputrate asshownonthe modelrating
,late.(Electricheaters- watts dividedby 1000x 34!5 equal
BTU/Hr.rate.)
Yourlocaljurisdictionalauthority,whilemandatingthe useofa
temperature-pressurereliefvalvecomplyingwith ANSI 7-21.22
and ASME,may require a valvemodeldifferentfrom the one
furnishedwiththe waterheater.
Compliancewith suchlocalrequirements mustbesatisfiedby
the installeror enduserofthe waterheaterwitha locallypre-
scribedtemperature-pressurerelief valveinstalledin the desig-
nated openingin the water heater in placeofthe factoryfor_
nishedvalve.
Forsafeoperationofthe water heater,the reliefvalvemustnot
beremovedfromit'sdesignatedopeningor plugged.
The temperature-pressurerelief valvemustbeinstalleddirectly
intothefittingofthewater heaterdesignatedforthe reliefvab/e.
:Positionthe valvedownwardandprovidetubingsothatanydis-
chargewill exit onlywithin 6 inchesabove,or at anydistance
belowthe structuralfloor.Be certainthat no contactismade
withanyliveelectricalpart.The dischargeopeningmust not be
blockedor reducedin sizeunderanycircumstances.Excessive
length,over 30 feet,or useof morethan fourelbowscancause
restriction andreducethedischargecapacityofthevalve.
No valveor otherobstructionisto beplacedbetweenthe relief
valveandthe tank. Do not connecttubingdirectlyto discharge
drainunlessa6" airgapisprovided.Topreventbodilyinjury,haz-
ardto life, or propertydamage,thereliefvalvemustbe alk)wed
to dischargewaterinquantitiesshouldcircumstancesdemand.If
the dischargepipeisnot connectedto a drainor othersuitable
means,thewaterflowmaycausepmperty damage.
The DischargePipe:
Mustnot be smallerin sizethan the outletpipesizeofthe
valve,or haveanyreducingcouplingsor otherrestrictions.
Mustnot bepluggedor blocked.
Mustbeofmateriallistedforhotwaterdistribution.
Mustbe installedsoasto allow completedrainageof both
the temperature-pressurerelief valve,and the discharge
p_pe.
Mustterminateatan adequatedrain.
Mustnot haveanyvalvebetweenthe retiefvalveandtank.

The temperature-pressure relief valve must be manually
operated at leastonce a yea_ Caution should be taken to
ensurethat (I) no one isinfront of or aroundthe outlet of
the temperature-pressuren.-qiefvalvedischargeline,and (2)
the water manually dischargedwill not causeany bodily
injury or property damage because the water may be
exeremalyhot
If after manuallyoperatingthe valve,it failsto completely
resetand continuesto releasewater, immediatelydose the
cold water inlet to the water heater, follow the draining
instructions,and replace the temperature-pressure relief
valvewith a newone.
