Ping in this context refers to sending a simple test message, which requires only a simple
acknowledgement. It is a similar idea to the network command PING, which can be used to
test a TCP/IP network.
Figure 5-25 shows the Ping interval, Ping timeout, and Ping initial timeout parameters at the
bottom half of the Advanced page of the Application Server panel.

Datasource settings
The datasource settings are controlled using the WebSphere console. To access these
settings, select the datasource and then select the Advanced tab.
Refer to 5.3.2, Stateless connections on page 123, to learn about the important datasource
settings of minimum and maximum connection pool sizes.
Other settings are occasionally useful, especially when the system is performing poorly, as
explained in the following sections.
