Cautions concerning security when using
wireless LAN products
Wireless LAN connections offer the advantage that because the infor-
mation is exchanged between the computer, etc., and the wireless LAN
access point using radio waves rather than a LAN cable, LAN connec-
tions are possible as long as the devices are within the range of the radio
waves.
On the other hand, because the radio waves reach all places within their
range, even through such obstacles as walls, the problems below may
occur if the security settings have not been made.
!
Exchanged information may be viewed surreptitiously
Third parties with malicious intents may deliberately intercept the
radio waves and surreptitiously view the exchanged information,
including ID numbers, passwords, credit card numbers and other
personal information or e-mail messages.
! Your network may be infiltrated without authorization
Third parties with malicious intents may access your personal or
company network without authorization and obtain personal or con-
fidential information (leakage of information), impersonate specific
persons and release false information (impersonation), rewrite inter-
cepted information and issue the rewritten information (falsification)
or plant computer viruses, etc., that damage your data or system
(vandalism).
Wireless LAN products normally have a security system. Using the
product with the security settings activated decreases the above
risks.
It is your responsibility to thoroughly understand the risks of using
wireless LAN products without security settings and to make the
security settings according to your personal judgment.
